Blog for January 30, February 1 and 3

Wow! I don't know what we shared last week, but it wasn't a good share! We had 8 friends sick today! We pray that you would all recover and be able to join us again on Wednesday!

This week we are talking about the author and illustrator Denise Fleming. Denise illustrates her books with a method called pulp painting- she actually makes each page as an entire piece of paper, using stencils and colored paper pulp for illustrations.

We will be attempting to make some paper ourselves this week!

Some other skills we are working on are-

Use of resources: Children gather information and formulate ideas about their world.- What goes into a book? How is paper made? Great experiences make for great learning.

Art: Children express and represent what they observe, think, imagine, and feel through two- and three-dimensional art.- Hopefully our papermaking experience will become art.

Reading: Children read for pleasure and information- Getting to know authors and illustrators can encourage recognition of and familiarity with books. They become ours!

Jesus Time- This week we hear about Jesus calming a storm. Jesus had a busy day of preaching, healing and helping people. He wanted to go to the other side of the lake for a rest. Many of his disciples were former fishermen, they could handle a boat. When Jesus got in the boat, he found a cushion and fell asleep. While he was sleeping, a violent storm quickly whipped up on the Sea of Galilee and he slept on! His disciples frantically woke him, distraught and fearing for their lives. He questioned their faith- Didn't they just hear him preach, see him make blind men see and lame people walk again? Don't they trust Him? He simply said ,"Quiet, be still." And the storm ceased. The disciples were amazed, even the wind and waves obey him!
We don't need to worry either! We have a God who knows our needs and can calm the stormy seas of our hearts with the same "Quiet, be still. I am here".

Books of the Week- All by author/illustrator Denise Fleming- "In the Small, Small Pond", "In the Tall, Tall Grass", "Time to Sleep", "Underground", "lunch", "Go, Shapes, Go!" and "Barnyard Banter" are some.

Have a great week!

Information on the February field experience coming home Wednesday!

Get better!!

Blog for January 23, 25,and 27

What do you want to be when you grow up? We are looking at all sorts of different types of occupations this week in preschool. As we look we are working on the following KDIs-

Engagement: Children focus on activities that interest them.- What do you like to do? What interests do you have? They are pretty young to be thinking of a career, but it is interesting to see how many of them know what their parents do. Some of them know exactly what their parents do, some just know their parents work. We are exploring different tools for different jobs and different likes and dislikes.

Book knowledge: Children demonstrate knowledge about books- This week we talk about the difference between real and pretend or fiction and non-fiction books.

Community roles: Children recognize that people have different roles and functions in the community- We are talking about this specifically this week.

Jesus Time- This week we are talking about the big catch of fish that Peter, Andrew, James and John experienced when Jesus sent them out to fish during the day after they hadn't caught any fish the night before. They caught so many fish their nets started to break and their boats started to sink. Jesus then gave them the invitation to be "fishers of people" for him. They left their nets behind and came! We are fishers too!

Books of the Week- We are reading a variety of books this week about different careers, today we read about artists, astronauts and firefighters, we will read about police officers, news reporters, doctors, dentists and others.

Look for the email about kindergarten "sneak peek."

We will be going outside even in the rain, so boots and coats with hoods will be great!!

God bless your week!!

Blog for January 18 and 20

Wow! We are more than halfway through January! How did that happen! We are flying like superheroes!! In fact, this week I had planned to do an emergent theme, that means I choose something that students in my class seem to have a special interest in. We have been playing superheroes quite often, sometimes dressing up, often just playing with the action figures or Little People and being superheroes, so that is our theme this week.

Some of the KDIs we are emphasizing this week are-

Engagement: Children focus on activities that interest them.- Superheroes interest both the boys and the girls in our class. We had a lot of fun today playing with them!

Cooperative play: Children engage in cooperative play.- Superheroes always have a sidekick! We are playing together, building story lines and roles for ourselves and each other.

Pretend play: Children express and represent what they observe, think, imagine, and feel through pretend play.- How would you act if you were a superhero? What would your special power be? They are thinking about those ideas this week!

Jesus Time- This week we are learning about Jesus baptism and what it meant. It marked the beginning of Jesus' public ministry, when Jesus work was to share who He was and how God was making peace with the world through Him. He is the way, the truth and the life!

Books of the Week- "Superdog : The Heart of a Hero" by Caralyn and Mark Buehner and "Even Superheroes Have Bad Days" by Shelly Becker.

Kindergarten is just around the corner! Peace Lutheran School has one of the few half day kindergarten programs in the area!  Mrs. Kasten and I would like to offer the students in 4 year old preschool a "sneak peek" into kindergarten during the month of February. On Monday, Wednesday or Friday, we would have a couple of preschoolers visit kindergarten during their morning meeting time and just see what it is like.

I will be sending out an email that you can reply to whether you'd like your child to visit or not. Mrs. Kasten will be coming over during drop off time in the last week of January so you can become familiar with her.

Look for that email! We are so happy to have you and your families at Peace!!

Have a great week!

Blog for the week of January 9

Our first full week in 2017!

This week we are talking about the illustrator Lois Ehlert. Many of her illustrations are cut paper or mixed medium pictures. We will be trying our hand at some of those forms of art.

Some of the KDIs we are concentrating on this week are-

Conflict resolution: Children resolve social conflicts.- Cold weather means more time indoors in close quarters and more conflicts arise. We are using this opportunity to talk about using a kind voice, keeping our hands to ourselves and asking and sharing in kind ways.

Alphabetic knowledge: Children identify letter names and their sounds- As we attached letters to the "Chika, Chika Boom Boom" tree, we named each one and then reviewed them as they are taken down. Our letter is Bb for book this week.

Shapes: Children identify, name, and describe shapes.- We will be looking at shapes in illustrations and in how we can make our own pictures.

Jesus Time- Our story this week is about the boy Jesus in the temple. Jesus goes with his parents and many others to a celebration in Jerusalem at the temple. After the celebration, Jesus stays behind while his parents leave without him. When they return to Jerusalem to find him, he is in the temple, asking and answering questions of the teachers. When Mary scolds him, he reminds her that he is the Son of God and needs to be about his Father's business. We are children of God too, and we can share what he's done for us!

Books of the Week- All books written or illustrated by Lois Ehlert- "Chika, Chika, Boom, Boom", "Leaf Man", RRRRralph", "Waiting for Wings" and more!

Field trip on Thursday - Westland Public Library 6123 Central City Pkwy, between Warren and Ford. We will meet there at 9:30 to see what your library has to offer you!!

Blog for January 4 and 6, 2017

Happy New Year!! Glad to have you back!

We start out the year with a "Happy Birthday" theme.

Our letter for the week is Ww for wish. We will be having some birthday fun!

Some KDIs we are working on this week are-

Sense of competence: Children feel they are competent. - As we wrap birthday gifts, count candles and do our tasks this week along with getting dressed ourselves and opening our snacks, we know we can!

Fine-motor skills: Children demonstrate dexterity and hand-eye coordination in using their small muscles.- From wrapping packages, to making a birthday cake out of clay, to tracing and drawing our birthday wish, our fingers will get lots of work in the next couple of days.

Body awareness: Children know about their bodies and how to navigate them in space.- We are going to play "Pin the Tail on the Donkey" and some other birthday games. We will also get outside this week I hope!

Counting: Children count things.- How many candles go on the cake?

Jesus Time- This week we finish the nativity story with God keeping Jesus, Mary and Joseph safe as they escape to Egypt.  God takes care of us too, there is no where we can go that He is not with us!

Books of the Week- "Happy Birthday, Moon!" by Frank Asch, "Happy Birthday Oliver!" by Pierre Le-Tan, "Arthur's Birthday" by Marc Brown and "Jimmy's Boa and the Big Splash Birthday Bash" by Trina Hakes Noble.

Next week Thursday we have a field trip scheduled to the Westland Public Library. We plan to meet there at 9:30 am. There is no cost, just come and see what great things the library has to offer!! A note will come home today where you can indicate attendance.

Have a fantastic week!
